Brunei's Total Population from 1990 to 2023

In 1990, Brunei’s population was approximately 261,928, and by 2023, it had grown to around 452,524, representing an overall increase of nearly 200,000 people.

This population growth has been influenced by several factors, including a relatively high birth rate and improving healthcare standards, which have contributed to lower infant mortality and longer life expectancy. During the 1990s, the population grew consistently, with notable increases from 261,928 in 1990 to 327,045 by the end of the decade in 1999. This period saw Brunei benefiting from economic stability fueled by its robust oil and gas sector, which supported better living conditions and public health services.

From 2000 onwards, the population continued to grow steadily, although at a slower rate. For instance, between 2010 and 2020, the population increased from 396,053 to 441,725. This consistent growth can also be attributed to Brunei's immigration policies, which, while relatively conservative, have supported a controlled level of foreign workers to bolster economic sectors.
