Lotteries and Games of Chance Lead New Zealand's Betting Habits

When looking at betting habits in New Zealand, it's clear that different types of gambling attract varying levels of participation. Among the most popular activities, lotteries and games of chance such as Powerball and bingo top the list, with 45.05% of respondents having placed a bet on these within the past 12 months. This is followed by online slots and sports bets through apps.

Infrequent Sports Betting Dominates the Frequency Pattern

Sports betting is not necessarily a daily habit for most. The majority, about 40.6%, place bets on sports less than once a year. A smaller segment, however, bets more frequently, with 12.7% doing so a few times a year and others betting once a month. The motivations behind sports betting are also telling. A significant portion is driven by the desire to win money, while others find excitement or enjoy the added layer of competition and engagement in the games they follow.

Real-Time Betting Rises in Popularity

When asked about the preference for real-time betting, a large portion, nearly 50%, expressed a desire to bet while watching a game, either agreeing or strongly agreeing with the idea. In terms of betting frequency, casino-style games show a varied pattern. While 25.2% of respondents place bets a few times a year, there's also a consistent segment of casual players, with nearly 20% betting a few times a month.

"Tab" Dominates New Zealand's Betting Platform Loyalty

Interestingly, despite the diversity of platforms available, New Zealanders are quite loyal to a few brands. "Tab" is the most recognized online betting platform, cited by nearly half of of respondents. Other brands, including "Lotto" and "BET365," capture smaller shares of the market, but overall, many still find themselves returning to familiar platforms for their betting activities.
