Games of Chance Remain the Most Popular Form of Betting

In the past year, Americans have continued to engage in a variety of betting activities, though some forms of gambling remain far more popular than others. 39.4% of individuals have participated in lottery or games of chance, like Powerball or bingo, which is the most common form of betting. While games of chance dominate, other forms of betting are also widely popular, such as placing sports bets among friends or engaging with online slots. Interestingly, sports betting is also a major player, with about 21% of people betting on sports via online platforms or apps.

Sports Betting: A Regular Activity for Many

Betting on sports is not just an occasional activity for many—it's something that happens regularly. About 14% of people place sports bets a few times a month, while a smaller portion of bettors do so at least once a week. That said, nearly 38% bet on sports less than once a year, hinting at a more casual or seasonal approach to this activity. When people do place sports bets, it's often with a specific goal in mind. Over 44% say they bet because they want to win money, while some other enjoy the excitement and experience of it.

Real-Time Betting Enhances the Thrill

In terms of the type of sports betting people prefer, real-time betting seems to be a significant draw. Half of respondents express interest in betting on sports as they watch them. For these bettors, the opportunity to place bets as the action unfolds adds a layer of excitement that traditional betting doesn’t offer. This aligns with broader trends of integrating more dynamic, interactive experiences into entertainment and gambling.

Mobile and Online Platforms Dominate Betting

The shift toward mobile and online betting is also evident, with around 62% of sports bettors primarily using the internet or mobile apps to place their bets. The importance of convenience and accessibility is growing, as users can bet from virtually anywhere, bypassing the need to go to a sportsbook or casino. However, traditional forms of betting aren't disappearing entirely as a substantial group enjoys betting in person at casinos or sportsbooks.

DraftKings Leads the Online Betting Space

As for platforms, DraftKings remains the most recognized name in the online betting space, with around 20% of respondents naming it as the most well-known brand. FanDuel follows with about 10% awareness, while other platforms like BetMGM is also well-known but on a smaller scale.
