Urbanization Growth in Pakistan from 1990 to 2023

Pakistan’s urbanization grew from 30.6% in 1990 to 38.0% in 2023, a trend driven by population growth and rural-to-urban migration. Economic development, industrialization, and employment opportunities in major cities such as Karachi and Lahore attracted people from rural areas. While urbanization remained relatively slow in the 1990s, the rate accelerated post-2000s as Pakistan's economy shifted towards more urban-based industries. Despite challenges like insufficient infrastructure, the country continued to urbanize, with the urban population gradually increasing yearly. Urbanization reached 37.7% by 2022 and continued growing, highlighting the persistent demand for urban life.
