Ethiopia's exports grew steadily from $298 million in 1990 to $3.6 billion by 2023, underscoring the country's gradual industrialization and focus on agricultural exports. Coffee, a key driver, played a central role in sustaining growth, particularly during periods of high international demand in the 1990s and 2000s. From 2004 onwards, export value experienced significant growth, peaking at $3.3 billion in 2012, driven by diversification into textiles and manufacturing.

However, challenges such as global market volatility and internal political issues caused occasional declines, as seen in 2013 and 2020. Ethiopia's resurgence post-2020, culminating in $3.9 billion in 2022, highlights renewed efforts to boost export earnings through industrial parks and trade agreements.
