Everyday Actions Drive the Picture

Sustainability in Spain shows up first in daily routines. Recycling and composting are practiced by more than half of people, and nearly the same share reduce water use or adjust heating and cooling. Many also use energy-efficient appliances and prefer public transport, biking, or carpooling. These choices reveal a culture of practical sustainability, people act most where habits are easy, visible, and save money.

The Cost Burden and Infrastructure Gap

Yet these behaviors have limits. The biggest barrier is cost: almost half of Spaniards say sustainable products are too expensive. Recycling facilities remain uneven across the country, and public transport is still weak in many regions. Renters face added obstacles, unable to install solar or energy systems in their homes. Even those who want to go further often feel blocked by systemic and financial barriers.

Climate Concern Without Urgency

While most Spaniards express some concern about climate change, urgency is muted. Just under 20% are “extremely concerned,” while the rest are more moderate. Because the concern is softer, people are less likely to make big lifestyle changes unless they see clear incentives, better systems, or stronger reasons to act.
