Services Sector Contribution to GDP in Romania (1990-2022)

Romania's services sector experienced rapid growth, moving from 24.2% of GDP in 1990 to 49.2% in 2000. This expansion reflects Romania's transition from a centrally planned economy towards a market-oriented one, spurred by privatization and foreign investment. Despite some volatility, services steadily grew, peaking at 58.5% in 2019 due to increased demand in IT, outsourcing, and financial services. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary rise to 60% in 2020, as digital services expanded to meet economic needs. However, this was followed by a slight dip to 57.6% in 2022, indicating stabilization in the sector. Romania’s services sector remains a pillar of economic growth, especially within the EU market.
