Romanians Show Moderate Interest and Concern in Sustainability and Climate Change

In Romania, most people express some level of interest in sustainable living: over half describe themselves as “somewhat interested,” and nearly a third are “very interested.” Concern about climate change is also present but remains mostly moderate, with only 13% describing themselves as “extremely concerned.” While sustainability is acknowledged, it is often treated as one issue among many daily priorities. With this mindset, individuals are less likely to drive major lifestyle changes in response to climate change.

Barriers Reflect Cost and Infrastructure Gaps

The main obstacles to sustainable living in Romania are structural. High prices for sustainable products (44%) and insufficient recycling infrastructure (37%) stand out as the biggest challenges. Added to this are gaps in information, resistance to dietary changes, limited transport options, and housing restrictions, such as renters being unable to install solar panels. The motivation is there, but affordability and system-level support remain weak.

Everyday Sustainability Practices Focus on the Basics

Given these barriers and the generally moderate levels of concern, Romanians tend to adopt practical and visible habits rather than systemic lifestyle changes. Recycling and composting (59%) and energy-efficient appliances (51%) are the most common actions, followed by public transport, biking, or carpooling (49%). Water saving and buying local food also play an important role. These are household-level measures that deliver immediate impact.
