Trip Planning: Self-Planning Leaves Little Room for Traditional Agencies

Over half of UAE travelers prefer to plan trips themselves. This behavior reflects confidence, convenience, and a desire for control.

For traditional travel agencies, this means shrinking relevance, especially for leisure travel. Unless they offer something travelers can't get online (like rare access, localized support, or bundled savings that feel smarter), they’ll be bypassed. UAE travelers don't need someone to plan for them. They need just-in-time expertise or they’ll do it better themselves.

Booking Behavior: Digital-First Travelers Leave Less Room for Intermediaries

73% of UAE travelers book online. For a segment that already plans independently, self-booking is a natural extension. Online channels let them compare, use vouchers, and feel in control, making the process feel smarter and more efficient.

This means traditional travel agencies are often skipped unless they offer something extra (like special access or real-time help).

Even OTAs and DMCs need to shift focus. At booking, travelers don’t need convincing, they just need clarity:

- What’s included?

- Can I cancel?

- Is this final?

Make it fast, clear, and clean or they’ll go elsewhere.

Destination Choice: Close to Home Wins, Because It’s Easier to Trust

Although UAE travelers can afford long-haul travel, most still choose nearby destinations like Oman, Georgia, or Turkey. This isn’t a budget issue, it's about effort, comfort, and familiarity. Shorter flights, no time zone disruption, and easier logistics make these places feel more manageable.

Travel Style: Rest Comes First, Everything Else Is Optional

Relaxation is the top travel motivation for UAE travelers, followed by wellness. Adventure ranks low. This isn’t surprising in a fast-paced society where time off is limited and mental space is precious.

“Relaxation” means not having to deal with people. Not having to do too much. Not having to think. This is where most brands go wrong: they offer vague “escapes” or generic spa packages. What works better? Trips that protect their energy. Use real framing: “silent check-in,” “no-phone mornings,” “24h no interruption zone,” or “work-friendly reset.”
