Spending Level Variation in Planned Christmas Purchase Categories
Christmas gift purchasing in the United States involves a wide range of product categories, from everyday consumables to high-value discretionary items. Budget allocation decisions vary considerably across households, and the composition of planned purchases tends to differ depending on how much a shopper intends to spend overall during the season.
Clothing is the most consistently selected category across all spending tiers, ranging from 42% among those budgeting under $99 to 77% among $500–$999 spenders, pointing to its broad relevance regardless of budget size. The sharpest spending-related divergence appears in electronics and travel experiences. Electronics are chosen by 67% of those spending $1,000 or more but only 20% of the lowest-tier group, a 47-percentage-point gap that indicates electronics function as a high-commitment, budget-sensitive category rather than a general gifting staple. Travel experiences follow a similar pattern, with negligible interest at lower budgets. Gift cards, by contrast, maintain relatively stable appeal across all tiers, suggesting they serve as a budget-neutral fallback. Retailers targeting mid-to-high-budget shoppers should prioritise electronics and experiential offerings in their seasonal messaging, while gift card promotions may be better positioned as broadly accessible options across the full spending spectrum.
