Crypto is More of a Curiosity Than a Commitment in Australia

For many Australians, cryptocurrency remains a curiosity rather than a commitment. While over 35% say they’re familiar with digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, a slightly larger portion admit they aren’t familiar at all. This uncertainty translates into actual ownership as well, with only 28.76% having ever owned or used cryptocurrency, while a solid 66% have never ventured into the space. Even among those who are aware, engagement remains selective, reinforcing the idea that familiarity alone isn’t enough to drive adoption.

Australians Are Curious About Crypto, But Cautious

The interest, however, is there—though not necessarily in ownership. Many Australians are more inclined to learn than to buy, with a significant portion expressing curiosity about cryptocurrency despite not owning any. But skepticism plays a role too, as concerns over risks and downsides are just as prevalent as outright disinterest. This hesitation isn’t without reason; when asked about the biggest barriers to adoption, a lack of understanding was the dominant response, cited by over half of respondents. Security concerns followed closely behind.

Binance and Bitcoin Are the Most Used in Australia

For those who have dipped their toes into the market, Binance emerges as the most commonly used exchange. Coinbase, Crypto.com, and eToro see far lower usage. And when it comes to which cryptocurrencies Australians engage with, Bitcoin is the clear leader, with 34% having used it—significantly outpacing Ethereum, Dogecoin, and Tron.
