Online Shopping Has Become A Monthly Habit Across Europe | TGM Statbox

New TGM Research data shows how often UK, French and Italian consumers shop online, from weekly habits to monthly cycles, and what the gap reveals about e-commerce maturity.

According to TGM Research's E-commerce Insights 2026 study, covering over 7,000 consumers across seven markets, online shopping has become a regular habit. Looking at three key European representatives: the UK, France, and Italy, most consumers now shop online 2–3 times a month, though the exact pace still varies by market.

That gap matters more than it looks. Nearly every consumer in all three countries shops online at least occasionally. The real question for brands isn't whether people buy online, but how often they come back to the basket. Shopping frequency is one of the clearest signals of how mature, competitive a market has become, and it shapes everything from campaign timing to inventory planning.

Shopping Frequency Reveals How Mature Each Market Really Is

Across the three countries, online shopping behavior shows a broadly similar pattern, with most consumers making purchases on a regular monthly basis. However, there are some notable differences.

TGM Research's UK, France and Italy data shows three distinct rhythms:

  • The UK (N=1,031) appears to have the strongest tendency toward more frequent online shopping, with weekly purchases being more common (24%).
  • Italy (N=882) shows a balanced distribution between monthly and weekly shopping habits.
  • France (N=1,046) demonstrates a slightly more moderate pattern, with consumers tending to shop online less frequently overall.

Several factors drive these regional variations, but the core is clear: online shopping is no longer an occasional activity, but an embedded routine. Since digital purchasing becomes second nature, measuring shopping frequency offers far deeper insight into customer loyalty and market maturity than simply tracking whether someone shops online at all.

What This Means for Retailers and Brands

For retailers and brands operating across Europe, shopping frequency can be a planning input. How often consumers in a market buy online should influence promotional timing, inventory planning, retention strategy and campaign cadence.

  • In high-frequency markets like the UK, where consumers already shop weekly or near-weekly, continuous engagement works better than campaign spikes. Always-on promotions, loyalty programs and personalized retargeting keep pace with how often shoppers are already returning.
  • In France, brands need to work harder to convert occasional shoppers into habitual ones; targeted campaigns around key buying moments (paydays, seasonal sales, restock cycles) can shift shoppers from "once a month" toward "2–3 times a month."
  • In markets still building digital shopping habits, like Italy, the priority is reducing friction at the moments that matter most. Fast, reliable delivery and trusted payment options do more to build frequency than discounting alone

Tracking shopping frequency over time helps businesses spot behavioral shifts early, forecast demand more accurately, and build strategies that match how European consumers actually shop today.
