Most People in France Don’t Fully Understand Crypto

Cryptocurrency remains a confusing and unfamiliar topic for many people in France. While about one in three say they know what digital currencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum are, an even larger number—nearly 40%—admit they don’t know much about them. Another 27% have heard of crypto but don’t fully understand how it works. For most people, cryptocurrency is something they have heard about but don’t really use or encounter in their daily lives.

Few People in France Own or Use Crypto

When it comes to actually owning or using crypto, the numbers drop even further. Only about 25% of people in France have ever owned or used cryptocurrency, while more than 70% say they have never tried it. This gap between awareness and usage suggests that something is preventing people from taking the next step. The biggest reason cited by those who haven’t engaged with cryptocurrency is a lack of understanding. Safety concerns are another major factor, along with hesitation due to unclear government regulations and a general lack of trust in crypto platforms. Another significant concern is the volatility of cryptocurrency prices.

Interest in Crypto Exists, But Many Are Skeptical

Even though most people don’t own crypto, some remain curious. A significant percentage express interest in learning more, even if they haven’t made any purchases yet. However, there is also considerable skepticism—many are worried about the risks, and more than half simply have no interest in cryptocurrency at all.

Crypto Is Rarely Used for Payments in France

The way people prefer to pay for things also explains why cryptocurrency hasn’t gained widespread adoption. In France, most people still prefer using cash whenever possible. Others are open to digital payments, such as storing their credit card details on their phones, but when it comes to crypto, very few people use it for purchases. Only a small percentage report having ever paid for something with cryptocurrency. Even mobile wallets, which are designed to simplify payments, see little use—about 6% of people say they have set one up but never actually use it.

Bitcoin Is the Most Popular Cryptocurrency in France

Regarding which cryptocurrencies people use, Bitcoin is by far the most popular, followed by Ethereum, though at a significantly lower percentage. Overall, cryptocurrency remains something that most people either don’t understand, don’t trust, or don’t see a need for. While some are interested, the majority still have doubts, leaving cryptocurrency in a space where many have heard of it, but only a small group actively use it.
